Nevada (far from Vegas) and New Mexico get some very dark areas. Montana and Utah as well. great place to chill. especially where it's flat for a hundred miles so nothing is obstructing your view of the plains. easier to see Venus and mercury because you don't have mountains and shit in your way. also a lot of it is Parkland. so it will be reserved for a century or more before they can build on it.

I saw the milky way as a kid in Yosemite when camping overnight. Pitch dark, no moon. freaky as hell. lots of animals making noises. Owls hooting and other weird sounds. at least I think it was an owl. but looking at the milky way is like gas vapors or clouds almost but really bright with stars mixed in. kind of reddish tone too.
there should be a few times a year that All cities an people should volunteer to shut their lights off for a few hours for astro events -

I figured it to be 25 cents per cup or packet. 80 come in a box and was 19.95 or some shit. thats like 1950s cost for a cup of coffee. -

DSLRs get around that now due to the immediate feedback, and tracking computers on telescopes are much more accurate too…back then I was using a clock motor with a potentiometer on it to adjust the tracking and again, you only saw the results after you got the film developed.
I never did my own developing though I had a guy who did that for me and would use various techniques to get the best results out of my photos (more detail/contrast etc)
That is really cool to hear. I wish I was educated enough in photography to do so back then.
Shit, today you can build a observatory on your roof with these really high end scopes and like you said, have a tracking system lock onto a planet like Jupiter and sit in a warm room staring at a large monitor on a blistering but very clear-cold night with little ground heat distortion.

You know a most recent Mars mission planned had scientist suggesting that perhaps current healthy but marked with terminal illness (like Stage 2-3 Cancers) might be best candidates for a mission to mars because they would not return but allowed to die peacefully on the planet's life-pods that would be set up prior to the mission happening.
but fuck it, we have the Falcon 9 now. so it could be sent ahead with the pods and allow healthy Astronauts return to victory back on Earth.
Plus we need to mission to the Moon in 4 years so we can positively make sure water is there to build a fueling station by making hydrogen fuel from water.
No doubt Biden will kill the Space Program funding like Obama did. -
