It always astounds me that someone figured that out as one of the keys to planetary motion. His basis for the discovery was a faith in the concept of Platonic Solids, which he figured out didn't work but lead him to reason that instead of "perfect circles" like envisioned by ancient dogmas about the perfection of the heavens (which is why he went for the idea of the platonic solids in the first place), that the solution may in comic sections.
If you imagine a cone and take a particular crossection of it at a 0 degree angle, the crossection will be a circle... However if you take it at any other angle, it is... An ellipse. And in fact, a perfect circle can be modelled as a "special case" of ellipses, specifically an ellipse where the 2 foci are at the same location.
And thus he derives the general laws of orbital motion based on the properties of ellipses. -
