2019-04-06 at 4:59 PM UTC in We have a moral obligation to stop eating meatI don't know about any of you guys because I didn't read all 131 pages of this, but I train like a professional athlete and am required to get almost 200 grams of protein a day. If I don't make my macros, I'm basically wasting a workout and screwing up my schedule. While I do try to get a good deal of this from sources like eggs and Greek yogurt, the fact is that I'd be spending almost a thousand dollars a month on food alone if meat wasn't an option.
There are synthetic options out there like powdered protein, but I don't like those because they aren't FDA regulated and there are cases where lots of people have died from even bad batches of something simple to make like creatine. I try to do things as naturally as possible, and this often means I'm spending a lot of my free time hunting for my own meat or fishing for it. I also grow my own vegetables and fruit as often as possible.
Not sure if this has any bearing in the debate, but there was a time when I was living almost exclusively off the land and had to hunt and fish in order to supplement my food income or I would have starved. -
2019-04-06 at 4:52 PM UTC in Give me one good reason why I should refer to transgender people by their preferred pronouns
Originally posted by GGG So to answer the title of the thread: There is no good reason why I should refer to somebody by their preferred pronoun?
Also, is it okay for me to refer to you as a biological male, or do you contest to this fact? What if I want to use a pronoun that is in reference your biological sex rather than your 'gender sex'? Or should I, in the same sentence, say something like "HTS is a biological male and she eats corned beef daily." Gender may be a social construct, but sex is not. Where's the line?
I won't speak for HTS, but I guess my thought on the issue comes down largely to what you mean by "refer to transgender people."
Do you mean online? Do you mean in person? Are they transgender people you know personally or are they strangers?
I'm not attempting to be overly academic here, it's just that the question of how you approach any verbiage is simply going to be highly contingent on the situation you're in and the population you're speaking to -- even if you're just making statements of fact. For example, citing that African Americans make up a disproportionate amount of the crime rate or have way higher rates of illiteracy than their Caucasian counterparts is factual, but that doesn't mean you'd always feel comfortable make that point in discussion to a stranger, at the office, or in a classroom. Similarly, if you have someone close to you that is black and you're speaking in private, you may feel comfortable making the same point.
Moreover, even if being transgender is an dysphoria, it doesn't really cost you anything to entertain that delusion with a stranger simply out of respect for their preference. Moreover, if you maintain a working relationship with somebody and you don't want to complicate it by invoking these greater political ramifications of using their identity as a platform for you to make some kind of speech, you might refer to them as this pronoun just to make your job easier. -
2019-04-06 at 4:41 PM UTC in zizek vs jordan petersonThis thread really went downhill before I got a chance to respond to it due to Lanny's built in "you can't post anymore until we deem you cool enough" feature. At any rate, nobody asked me, but since this is an open forum I'll throw in my two cents.
I managed to make this far in life without reading Peterson, but I finally caved in earlier this year because people have been incessantly talking about him. I would say that I think he's a very gifted undergraduate lecturer and any bachelor's psychology program would be very fortunate to have such an involved and passionate instructor. Moreover, I think he does leverage good criticisms of socialism (albeit perhaps a bit shallow at time). However, I will say that it's pretty obvious that he doesn't really reach people who seriously study philosophy or psychology outside of this immediate limited audience. While he speaks claims with a certain amount passion, confidence, and conviction, he never really defends any of their prerequisite assumptions very well. For example, he might make grandiose claims about the nature of mankind and appeal to archetypes when pressed, but I haven't really seen any thorough work on his behalf proving that either 1) there is a cause and effect relationship between archetypes and "human nature" or 2) that, if this relationship existed, it's linear instead of reciprocal. Similarly, when he makes claims that the Jesus mythos is foundational to the formation of Western culture, he doesn't really address potential extraneous variables that influenced it or even influenced early Christianity (which I assume anyone would anticipate when making such large-scale claims).
The short version is that you can be a moderately successful academic and not necessarily be a very good critical thinker. I also can't help but think that more powerful institutions who would profit from someone packaging conservative morality with secular arguments are endorsing him and promoting his career a lot more forcefully than he potentially would have succeeded on the merits of his ideas alone. -

Originally posted by whoami The JB thread on zoklet drove at least 1/3 of the traffic to the site toward the end. Then 1/3 from drugs and another 1/3 from fraud and petty crime. What a wonderful and underappreciated beacon of light it was in an increasingly derelict internet.
I'm just openly saying I don't want to be a part of any JB thread or anything of the sort. While I agree that it attracts attention to the forum, I feel like it potentially attracts the wrong kind of attention. That being said, there are plenty of other outlets where people who are interested in that sort of thing can pursue their interests without jeopardizing Lanny's career or the future of this site.
Although to be fair, I'm not sure I really am invested in the future of this site. I just think it's fun to shitpost. -

2019-04-04 at 12:20 AM UTC in It's almost SummerPeople spend all winter bitching about how much they hate winter because it's cold and snowy.
Then people spend all spring complaining about how it rains too much and is still too cold.
Then summer comes and people whine that it's too hot.
Then autumn comes and people complain that they can't wait for the holidays.
Everyone constantly bitches about everything constantly. Just take time to enjoy the current state of things. -

Originally posted by -SpectraL At the time Henderson and the others got popped, there wasn't even any fraudulent coupons on Zoklet. I removed them all. The only thing there was links to some counterfeit coupon resources. The feds still moved in and threatened zok with subpoena (so he willingly cooperated without a warrant), and they still used those links as evidence of coupon forgery.
Not surprising. Zok and Jeff Hunter were in fact roommates, but I don't think Zok really believed in the original message as much as Jeff did. Honestly, Jeff stopped believing in the message as well because he could see the changing times resulted in the site outgrowing its purpose. I remember hot topics in the early 2000s were to the tune of "Do you have a anti-federalist or federalist interpretation of the constitution (and why)?" Posts by the mid to late 2000s were more like "Do you wipe your ass standing up or sitting down?"
The place went downhill pretty fast, and there was time one could justify the occasional strain of necessary law enforcement attention due to the fact that it was a natural consequence of having a free forum of information where no ideas were censored. Unfortunately, the internet became pretty mainstream and technology simply became so accessible that it largely invalidated Jeff's original mission. Add this to the growing culture of fear in the United States, and effectively it reached a point where the site became nothing more than a liability. It really was in everyone's best interest to just walk away. Everything changed so quickly in that decade that a site like Totse wouldn't have served as anything other than a relic of an earlier time.
Afterwards, a few die hard fans who either had no life outside of it (Bill Krozby) or people who hardcore believed the message but didn't want to see it die (-Spectral). The truth is it's over, and a site like this is a funny community to shit post because you can almost certainly say whatever you want. I find it honestly pretty doubtful that taxpayer money is being spent on police monitoring this site even semi-regularly just by virtue of the fact that, even if the people here were actually malicious, almost all of us are too severely retarded to accomplish anything. -

2019-04-03 at 11:40 PM UTC in Did anyone get arrested for Totse/zoklet activities directly?I know it's fun to bust -Spectral's balls sometimes, but he's actually telling the truth. The main reason Zoklet got attention from LE was because of the coupon thing. People were arrested. There were way more arrests from &Totse, but that's because &T was part of a period in time where people actually did things other than shitpost in space about Zok having AIDs or whatever. Also, he was indeed a mod of Bad Ideas, and I remember spectral being a relatively good mod because he complimented the spirit of the forum with an extremely Laissez-faire approach.
On a slightly related note, I never did figure out what that guy did with his piss balloons. . . -

2019-04-01 at 11:36 PM UTC in ATTN: LannySpectraL is a fucking hacker god. Even if your meager minds could comprehend his powers, it would take you lifetimes to learn to control them.
For one, you fucking fags are all running Linux. Spectral knows that Kali is for beta male virgin losers who couldn't hack their way out of an etch-a-sketch. He runs the real hacker OS -- Windows XP. By refusing to update it for years, he manages to make it extremely secure. In fact, by virtue of the fact that it isn't a supported operating system anymore, that makes it even more secure since nobody is paying attention to it.
So yeah, get back on the turnip trucks you fucking plebs. Don't make him angry.
