Surprisingly it's where the actor Ian Mckellen grew up but I'm sure he hasn't bothered to come back in decades. George Orwell wrote a famous book, "The road to Wigan Pier" during his socialist awakening.
It's an historic mining town, full of generations of wife beating alcoholics and now smack heads. The women talk like men and have jaws like bike seats.
On that note do you notice certain towns have genelogical similarities? -
