It's crazy because people didn't actually believe the Earth was flat back in the day. There are A LOT of maps showing that people mostly knew they hadn't exactly mapped the globe.
Columbus thought that shit was empty. At first he believed he went off course and landed in Japan. But he was actually solidly on course, his theory was just wrong about there being nothing.
Then as it came out, and more was charted, we had maps where basically the pacific ocean was tiny and the americas only had east coasts. Maps from this era are interesting because the dimensions and locations of things are so off, it's a wonder they found ANYTHING.
Imagine crossing the ocean without GPS, but also without accurate maps.
Really its fucking incredible people used to travel hundreds of miles to sack cities. I don't know if everybody was asking for directions or what but I feel like it was probably pretty easy to accidentally pillage the wrong place.
