The EU needs Russian gas, at least in the short-mid term. The US and European Atlanticists (?) are trying to force Russia out of the market to make way for far more expensive US exports (shale extraction + transatlantic shipping is significantly more expensive than pipelines), but Germany is having none of it, evidenced by their acceleration of the NORD-STREAM pipeline.
In short, most of the EU stands little to gain from toeing the US' line, but Brussels and national governments are stacked with Atlanticists. The ideal situation (for the EU) would be for the EU, or EU states retaking sovereignty and managing their own relations with the US and Russia, but if they ever start to slip out of US control, their economy will be dismantled and the union broken up.
As it stands the powerful EU economy is being ruthlessly exploited by the US, and they'd much rather see it destroyed than lose control.
germany can be energy independent if only they are willing to quit being such a queer and start burning coals like they used to. -
