Nowadays you would essentially grow up identifying and being identified as a white person of Hispanic origins, same way an Italian now gets to feel like a white person when literally Thomas Fucking Jefferson specifically called them out as being "swarthy" nonwhites who didn't deserve to come to the white (Anglo-Saxon) man's America, and Italian immigrants were considered virtually completely unintegratable, burdensome immigrants driving down wages.
All these things don't make someone nonwhite. It just means you found the racist overlap of what previously seemed like two mutually exclusive sets.
