They appear to be claiming that the water level is low enough that further draining it threatens an endangered species of salmon in there and would put local native American populations relying on it for drinking water at risk.

    I've had mine for 40 or fifty years and it still works fine. All I've ever had to do to it was to replace a few tips over the years.
