For starters, the US is owed 17 trillion. That's 17 trillion borrowed FROM the US, by other countries. This is because most major countries have debt. It is good for the economy. The US has one of the healthiest economies in the world, and holds the world's largest GPD. Don't let big numbers scare you. Debt is good when you manage it well, and the US manages it very well. Other countries like Italy and Greece and Spain also hold debt, but don't manage it quite as well. This is why US interest rates are low as fuck. We've a good record of paying things back.
You can't think of it in the same way as a citizen holding debt. The whole idea that this rising debt is a bad thing is totally ludicrous. It's just a scare tactic made up by media and politicians to try and scare you into believing things are worse than they are.
