big agree dat "transactional" isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if its *all* your relationship is (which is what op is sayin) that's not really healthy. i guess u can get cynical and say "even love is transactional ur just making eachother feel happy chemicals and if one of you stops feeling that the relationship is pointless", but that's some super jaded 'altruism doesn't exist' kind of stuff. healthy relationships should be transactional, but should probs also be a lot more than transactional.
(also important what kind of transactions we're talking about, how fair they are, and how socially acceptable they are. if the transaction is 'i am pretty and you are gross, old, and wealthy - i'll be your arm candy and you write me into your will' that's... i mean, more power to both parties in that situation tbh, but society generally gonna call that transactional where they wouldn't say that about 'you do dishes and i'll cook dinner'. cuz if u ever talked about division of labor with your partner that was incredibly transactional, but nobody is gonna ack like having clearly delineated obligations to support eachother and make eachothers lives easier is a bad thing.)The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
