Sepsis can stay in the body for a long time. Many people have recurring episodes where minor injuries will lead to an infection, which can ultimately complicate as it did in hydros case. Likely it started in the knee and spread to the blood and maybe her bones. Amputation to stop the spread is often times what they do when a bone infection doesn't show signs of stopping, but since she refuses blood transfusions they probably won't do that.
What's weird though is recurrent infections aren't always the same type of bacteria. Right now hydro says she has MRSA and I'm pretty sure she didn't have that last year. Kind of interesting.
