Point stands, no matter what you know, being able to shut up and humble yourself is a valuable character trait. Being a trail blazer is important, but what use is it if you're a stubborn prick who can't shut up and listen. It's similar to how you never want to surround yourself with yes men, because you'll never truly know if you're making the wrong decision. Being able to take real criticism, and give it out, is a part of being a well rounded man.

It may not be common knowledge to everyone. OP seems like he's struggling to find the balance. This is the best advice I can give him. Be honest and genuine with yourself and those who clearly want to help you, and just have fun with all the fair weather friends and associates who clearly offer you nothing. If having fun to you is being a prick, do that. But be warned, even the people you'd never expect to impact your life negatively, they'll come back. When you least expect it. So be careful how you play with fire. -

It’s fun and entertaining to be abrasive in the right situations, with people who are in on the joke or people who can’t negatively impact your life, but it takes a true man of experience to know or be willing to shut the fuck up and listen. You might learn something. Trick is to be able to distinguish which situation calls for what behavior.
Ultimately, you should just be honest with yourself about who you are, your goals and your capabilities. If you can do that, it’s easy to spot when it’s time for jokes and when it’s time to be serious and show respect to an elder. Not everyone who gives you advice is trying to control you. If you live in that mindset, you’ll destroy relationships and opportunities that could have been immensely beneficial to you. -

Matter of fact, he set me up for a big fall that day and I still forgave him. Besides, you only ever get him bacon vodka for his birthday. Sure, you make a sweet custom label every year, but you also infuse the batches with rare decaying animal parts. All because you know he’ll get desperate and drink the stuff. I’m not like that so I don’t get him anything. Nothing is always better than something cruel. And I’m man enough to know when the only true victory is retreat.

You forgot to mention we rented all the faces of death and bum fights videos on his video rental account because we knew his name and password, then never returned them. He called us up bitching about his late charges weeks later, but ultimately just said “this needs to stop.” Sometime later at skool I gave his original thrashed DVD back just to spite him for leaving us behind. It was in the case, but the disk itself was scratched to shit and dripping with ink. He ditched us far from home cause he was trying to impress his fat and gross girlfriend. Been there, but fuck him. I remember we were hitch hiking home and a guy pulled over and said he only had room for one. We looked at each other for one last goodbye before I climbed into the farm truck, fully prepared to be abducted and murdered. I really took one for the team that day. -

He waltz’s in here flaunting his custom lolcats like he’s hot shit, nobody is impressed, so he calls me crying about how his existence is meaningless and all his old friends hate him. Naturally I try to improve his perspective by bro’ing out with him and making fun of MLK. We have the best of times on the phone until his girlfriend cucks him into “watching a movie” so he hangs up on me. Minutes later he posts this thread, back stabbing me, trying to act card (which he isn’t even) and sending me the link, literately laughing maniacally in my face that he has no loyalty. The whole “lolcat” shtick is just a front for what a miserable peice of shit he is. I’ll never stop falling for this tho because he’s my buddy and it ain’t easy having pals.
