He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.

Whatever their conscious motives, these men cannot know why they are as they are. As sickening as I find their behavior, I have to admit that if I were to trade places with one of these men, atom for atom, I would be him: There is no extra part of me that could decide to see the world differently or to resist the impulse to victimize other people. Even if you believe that every human being harbors an immortal soul, the problem of responsibility remains: I cannot take credit for the fact that I do not have the soul of psychopath. If I had truly been in Komisarjevsky's shoes on July 23,2007 - that is, if I had his genes and life experience and identical brain (or soul) in an identical state - I would have acted exactly as he did. There is simply no intellectually respectable position from which to deny this.

Applying the parking brake is a no-brainer.

The above piece is called All Is Vanity. The drawing employs a double image (or visual pun) in which the scene of a woman admiring herself in a mirror of her vanity table, when viewed from a distance, appears to be a human skull. The title is also a pun, as this type of dressing-table is also known as a vanity.

The phrase "All is vanity" comes from Ecclesiastes 1:2 ("Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.")

Kohelet proclaims (1:2) "Vanity of vanities! All is futile!"; the Hebrew word hevel, meaning "vanity" or "vain", concretely referring to a "mist", "vapor", or "mere breath", and metaphorically to 'something that is fleeting or elusive' (with different nuances depending on the context).

Kohelet states that the only good is to partake of life in the present. People should enjoy, but should not be greedy; no-one knows what is good for humanity; righteousness and wisdom escape humanity. Kohelet reflects on the limits of human power: all people face death, and death is better than life, but people should enjoy life when they can. The world is full of risk: he gives advice on living with risk, both political and economic. Mortals should take pleasure when they can, for a time may come when no one can.

Scientists are trying to figure out why 2023 was so hot.

What happened in 2023 remains a riddle that has piqued intense curiosity from climatologists, but Dessler says finding an answer won’t change the fact that global warming, caused by human activity, is still happening with no end in sight.

“We now have the technology to stop doing it, to stop warming the climate mostly,” Dessler says. “The other thing that matters is the reason we’re not doing it is because of the politics, and because of how immensely powerful fossil fuels are as a special interest.”

Got a good double kill tonight. After a fresh start the other night we were looting in another town when we noticed some infected corpses and knew there was another player. We were able to track the other player to a small garage / shed building, due to them aggravating the infected while they made their way through town.

The building had a window and I took aim with a recently acquired Mosin. The player dropped and the infected were after me. My partner went to check the shed to confirm the kill or finish him off if unconscious. But was blasted away as soon as he opened the door by a second player.

I retreat to a nearby house and wait for the infected to calm down. There was about a dozen infected in the area. After some time I sneak to the shed. It has two entrances. I carefully open one entrance while staying in cover, then the other, while the player is closing them again. I went back and forth, opening the doors and staying in cover, then started running around the building and kept opening doors as I ran around.

The infected noticed and swarmed and that's when I took a chance and ran inside. I had an axe and managed to rush the player and quickly kill him. He did get two shots off but thankfully was not able to hit me firing his rifle in close quarters. After killing him I closed the doors before any infected got in. Got to take the best loot off the two bodies in the shed as well as my partners old body.

You have to understand, most of these people are not ready to be unplugged. And many of them are so inured, so hopelessly dependent on the system, that they will fight to protect it.

Suppose the system survives the crisis of the next several decades. By that time it will have to have solved, or at least brought under control, the principal problems that confront it, in particular that of “socializing” human beings; that is, making people sufficiently docile so that heir behavior no longer threatens the system. That being accomplished, it does not appear that there would be any further obstacle to the development of technology, and it would presumably advance toward its logical conclusion, which is complete control over everything on Earth, including human beings and all other important organisms. The system may become a unitary, monolithic organization, or it may be more or less fragmented and consist of a number of organizations coexisting in a relationship that includes elements of both cooperation and competition, just as today the government, the corporations and other large organizations both cooperate and compete with one another. Human freedom mostly will have vanished, because individuals and small groups will be impotent vis-a-vis large organizations armed with supertechnology and an arsenal of advanced psychological and biological tools for manipulating human beings, besides instruments of surveillance and physical coercion. Only a small number of people will have any real power, and even these probably will have only very limited freedom, because their behavior too will be regulated; just as today our politicians and corporation executives can retain their positions of power only as long as their behavior remains within certain fairly narrow limits.

The Industrial Revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race. They have greatly increased the life-expectancy of those of us who live in “advanced” countries, but they have destabilized society, have made life unfulfilling, have subjected human beings to indignities, have led to widespread psychological suffering (in the Third World to physical suffering as well) and have inflicted severe damage on the natural world. The continued development of technology will worsen the situation. It will certainly subject human beings to greater indignities and inflict greater damage on the natural world, it will probably lead to greater social disruption and psychological suffering, and it may lead to increased physical suffering even in “advanced” countries.
