Ocean tipping point: losing the ability to absorb CO2

Since we have begun burning fossil fuels, the ocean has acted as a buffer, preventing us from feeling the full effects of our actions. This article states that the ocean will eventually lose its ability to absorb CO2. Currently, the ocean absorbs about 1/3 of our CO2 emissions, but soon that 1/3 will instead end up as a GHG in our atmosphere.

This is collapse related, because we have depended on the ocean's ability to protect us from ourselves. We will be seeing warming happening at a much faster pace as a result. The ocean also absorbs 93% of all heat captured by human-caused GHGs, and perhaps that could also be ending soon.

Bee and butterfly numbers are falling

Over the past 15 years, populations of bees shrank 62.5% and those of butterflies dropped 57.6% in a forest in the U.S. southeast. In addition, the number of bee species there fell by 39%, the team reports this month in Current Biology.

The team suspects climate change may be warming the region and affecting bee and possibly butterfly survival.

Water crisis in West has prompted desperate ideas: Drain the Great Lakes, desalinate ocean water

A single healthy tree needs about 11,000 gallons of water annually, and some Utah authorities are pushing to seriously consider large-scale thinning projects that would remove large swathes of forest. They argue that water could then be used to replenish the shrinking Great Salt Lake.

Fact check: Plymouth Rock has been moved, not an accurate gauge of sea level rise since 1620

Plymouth Harbor sea levels are estimated to have risen roughly 1.5 feet since 1620, according to a state agency spokesperson.
