Not true. Only about 3% of those who took up arms for the Confederate States of America were slaves owners. In the south it was only 6% total that owned slaves at the start of the war. At the peak of Slavery in 1860 only 1.4% of Americans owned slaves. The primary source of data about slaves and slaveholding in 1860 is that year's census. -
