   generally they try to isolate the specific compound that has the effect they're looking for - sometimes it turns out that the raw plant has better healing properties because there are other beneficial compounds in there that were previously unknown, but that's the cost of trying to make the treatment as safe as possible

    it was never verified, but I'm under the impression (based on the code) that it was just a single developer and he got sick of the constant scrutiny and accusations of backdooring it. the crowdsourced code audit never picked up any issues, just messy versioning from memory.
    
    if you want to use it, it's now beenn forked to Veracrypt which is still under active development.
