the main thing is they have Magento set up on shared servers that already have contested resources and are too cheap to create dedicated instances. I've been trying to talk these guys into moving hosting to Azure or AWS for a number of reasons but again, too cheap. Even though in a lot of circumstances the price would be less than what we're currently paying for dedicated servers.

I managed to speed things up significantly by using Redis and fine-tuning MySQL's Qcache, as well as adding a generic robots.txt file because there wasn't one already for some reason and the site was serving roughly 2x as much data to crawlers as to actual users. Qcache has been deprecated in the latest versions of MySQL though apparently because people often don't configure it properly and end up overloading the CPU. I'd like to move to PostGre but fuck taking responsibility for a project like that.

I suppose it would be good to have a few devices in a location for redundancy/increased bandwidth or processing power and they could mesh for coordination but it's not strictly necessary.

I was thinking for almost impossible to trace proxy routes. can't think of much else really.

anonymised distributed services across a wide geographical area might be an option but raspberry pis (especially the zeros linked above) don't have a whole lot of processing power for that

it's not that Yemen is untouchable, it's mostly two things:

    1. Saudi Arabia has no business forcing Yemen to accept their puppet President and no matter how many times they repeat that he is/was 'internationally recognised' there's no getting around the fact that he was deposed by popular uprising, largely BECAUSE he was selling the country off to KSA.

    2. KSA's siege tactics amount to serious war crimes and 'crimes against humanity' which seriously undermine any claims to moral superiority that the US, UK, France etc. love to signal.

My favourite example is what they did to Hodeida, Yemen's main port. Early on in the war KSA bombed the port cranes so that they couldn't load or unload cargo, and being the only major port this caused extreme food and medicine shortages, later leading to the famine and Cholera epidemics. They then blockaded the port so that the cranes couldn't be repaired, and actually petitioned the UN to give them administrative control of the port because the 'Yemeni authorities couldn't keep it running'.

looks like I'm getting into this because the web dev guy doesn't know anything about it and the contractors they hired are... limited

I'd doubt Varnish would help in this circumstance (resources are limited enough as it is) but setting up Redis now

they've been doing it for the last four years or so so I don't think the ethics question really bothers them

Also keep in mind the US HAS to blame Iran because they can't admit that one of the poorest countries in the world could completely bypass the Patriot missile systems they've been selling KSA for something like 60 billion a year

this is exactly what I meant by evidence becoming inadmissible and truth being based on trust a while ago, though I never ended up making that thread

Iran doesn't care, the Yemenis specifically targeted components that wouldn't grind production to a halt likely as a warning and to avoid getting the US upset about the world oil supply being crippled.

While the US does benefit in that their shale oil cannot turn a profit unless oil prices are significantly over $70 a barrel, I doubt this is some kind of black/false flag attack because the Yemenis have been bombing Saudi oil infrastructure for the last few months and have documented the weapons used and how the attacks were planned.
