   I wonder if this is a false/black flag attack where Trump donors aren't even the real target - the real goal is to trigger legal reform to mask the identities of donors (ie. to make buying candidates easier), and creating the perceived threat of violence is just the first step in that goal.

   He's actually employed in naval research; he's not a crank. It seems more likely to me that these technologies are known to be flawed or otherwise infeasible and that releasing them publicly is a move designed to cause foreign competitors to sink money into research into projects that will go nowhere. The fact that he has patented viable technologies in the past make these red herrings all the more enticing.
