He's a pragmatist before anything else. When I say 'soft' I mean he tries to work within the parameters of the current political order, trying to work with the west even though he gets burnt again and again. The two most powerful political groups in the country are Putin's party and the old-world Communists who want to bring back the USSR. The primary complaint people have with Putin is that he's 'too soft' when it comes to the constant insults from the west, not the gay rights nonsense that makes the news.
Sure, it makes sense for the guys pulling the strings who stand to make a lot of money from a new arms buildup but the people who think Navalny is a serious player or that Russians in general want to be more like the US are getting played hard. -

Up until the Crimea sanctions Russia's primary exports were gas and petrol, but up until 2004 or so ALL of the profits went to the oligarchs and their offshore backers. It wasn't until Putin forced them into line that the state and people saw any benefit from those resources -

The company knows this and takes advantage but doesn't really lie or make any promises, just advertises the top earners as something to aspire to.
Women entering the workforce en masse was a mistake not because women shouldn't be in the workforce, but because it created the expectation that women should work. It created an explosion of ridiculous make-work jobs like HR and compliance managers and has, over time made it very difficult to sustain a family on a single income - effectively locking women (at least in lower social/income brackets) out of traditional homemaking roles. -
