It would probably be beneficial for hts to grab onto one of those bell towers and just hang while making guttural " hurrrrr" sounds like a phantom to help stretch the spine.

2019-04-14 at 3:09 AM UTC in This website is full of AtheistsAll the negativity, toxicity and hate is because of this reason. Consider how much hate certain users get;
William bill Bill Krozbyby, Infinityshock, HTS, sploo, Phantasmagoria, WellHung, Cupocheer, hydromorphone. There is an endless cycle of bullying and negative depressed attitudes that go on here and we are all guilty of perpetuating it. Any outsider that comes to this place will either be sucked into the void of toxicicity or realize that the userbase is fundamentally dysfunctional and leave.
The vast majority of the DH crowd left for this reason and the only ones who stuck around are ones who are used to such horrible behavior.
The root of this all goes back to Atheism. Can any of you truly say you are satisfied with your spiritual life? because the way you interact reflects loss, suffering and ego.

2019-04-06 at 4:52 PM UTC in Give me one good reason why I should refer to transgender people by their preferred pronouns
Originally posted by GGG So to answer the title of the thread: There is no good reason why I should refer to somebody by their preferred pronoun?
Also, is it okay for me to refer to you as a biological male, or do you contest to this fact? What if I want to use a pronoun that is in reference your biological sex rather than your 'gender sex'? Or should I, in the same sentence, say something like "HTS is a biological male and she eats corned beef daily." Gender may be a social construct, but sex is not. Where's the line?
I won't speak for HTS, but I guess my thought on the issue comes down largely to what you mean by "refer to transgender people."
Do you mean online? Do you mean in person? Are they transgender people you know personally or are they strangers?
I'm not attempting to be overly academic here, it's just that the question of how you approach any verbiage is simply going to be highly contingent on the situation you're in and the population you're speaking to -- even if you're just making statements of fact. For example, citing that African Americans make up a disproportionate amount of the crime rate or have way higher rates of illiteracy than their Caucasian counterparts is factual, but that doesn't mean you'd always feel comfortable make that point in discussion to a stranger, at the office, or in a classroom. Similarly, if you have someone close to you that is black and you're speaking in private, you may feel comfortable making the same point.
Moreover, even if being transgender is an dysphoria, it doesn't really cost you anything to entertain that delusion with a stranger simply out of respect for their preference. Moreover, if you maintain a working relationship with somebody and you don't want to complicate it by invoking these greater political ramifications of using their identity as a platform for you to make some kind of speech, you might refer to them as this pronoun just to make your job easier. -
2019-04-06 at 4:41 PM UTC in zizek vs jordan petersonThis thread really went downhill before I got a chance to respond to it due to Lanny's built in "you can't post anymore until we deem you cool enough" feature. At any rate, nobody asked me, but since this is an open forum I'll throw in my two cents.
I managed to make this far in life without reading Peterson, but I finally caved in earlier this year because people have been incessantly talking about him. I would say that I think he's a very gifted undergraduate lecturer and any bachelor's psychology program would be very fortunate to have such an involved and passionate instructor. Moreover, I think he does leverage good criticisms of socialism (albeit perhaps a bit shallow at time). However, I will say that it's pretty obvious that he doesn't really reach people who seriously study philosophy or psychology outside of this immediate limited audience. While he speaks claims with a certain amount passion, confidence, and conviction, he never really defends any of their prerequisite assumptions very well. For example, he might make grandiose claims about the nature of mankind and appeal to archetypes when pressed, but I haven't really seen any thorough work on his behalf proving that either 1) there is a cause and effect relationship between archetypes and "human nature" or 2) that, if this relationship existed, it's linear instead of reciprocal. Similarly, when he makes claims that the Jesus mythos is foundational to the formation of Western culture, he doesn't really address potential extraneous variables that influenced it or even influenced early Christianity (which I assume anyone would anticipate when making such large-scale claims).
The short version is that you can be a moderately successful academic and not necessarily be a very good critical thinker. I also can't help but think that more powerful institutions who would profit from someone packaging conservative morality with secular arguments are endorsing him and promoting his career a lot more forcefully than he potentially would have succeeded on the merits of his ideas alone. -
