I've always wanted to know when the whole idea of a monogamous relation came about.
As to the 'idea' and at least its popularization in western culture, see Jesus on divorce.
As to why Jesus espoused that, I would look to Rome's desire to conquer the Germans, who were monogamous (see Tacitus).
As for biological reasons for its adoption, it's a reproduction strategy that would seem to have some benefits, don't you think?
