From POTS to VOIP
Both POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocols) have as their primary function to serve people's voice communication needs. However where you can get voice comms you can also get a data stream to send files and messages thorough. We are very lucky as there is an uncompressed VOIP protocol that uses an uncompressed stream. This means that, theoretically, you can get the same speeds as old-school dial-up speeds through a VOIP modem, often connecting at 48.8 kbps using the 56k v.90 and v.92 communications protocols. It is currently not possible to connect at the full 57.3 (56k) speeds because one end of that modem transaction needs to be fully digital to handle that, such as an ISDN line (Integrated Services Digital Network). ISDNs have two channels of 64 kbps throughput, so if you really know what you're doing you could lease an ISDN line and host two 56k dial-ins from the one ISDN connection. But back to POTS and VOIP, these technologies are exceptionally cool, allowing comms in times of war, natural disaster, or other horrific and unforeseen events when the Internet infrastructure is under attack or a catastrophe of some sort. For an average person with a POTS or VOIP line you can expect, under optimal conditions to get 48.8 kbps. On less than optimal lines, such as my own, I can easily get 19.2 kbps, but I use it for messaging and not transferring files so it works for me. My setup is rather sweet: I have an external 56k v.90 and v.92 modem by US Robotics that I connect into my Ubuntu/Linux box via an DTECH FTDI USB to Serial cable. The cable is expensive at around $30 CAD from Amazon but it is really quite cool, lighting up with different colours to indicate whether the device is primarily sending or receiving data at the moment. If I want 28.8 kbps to 33.6 kbps speeds I can bring a Ubuntu/Linux box downstairs and hook it right into the house's POTS connection. FAXes also work over both POTS and VOIP connections. That POTS works with FAXes is a given, as its obvious, but working over VOIP isn't that expected, but with an uncompressed VOIP line you can treat it as any old school POTS connection. It works quite well, surprisingly indeed. I use the GrandStream HT802 VOIP ATA (Analog Telephone Adaptor) for the hardware, and VOIP.ms as my service provider, who by the way has amazing rates—the best out there.
FAX Modems
Most modems that you can easily purchase now-a-days can also communicate with FAX protocols, that allow you to both send and receive FAXes from your modem. If you are receiving FAXes then this is a much better option than using a dedicated FAX machine. I have actually received advertisements on my old FAX machine that would give information about various retailers, home repair people, and un-requested garbage. Using a FAX modem with the appropriate software you can have your FAX modem save the FAXes in some sort of format that allows you to pick and choose what you want and what you don't want. It saves on printer paper and is far less annoying.

zk-SNARKs works on what is known as zero-knowledge proofs. Zero knowledge proofs have been directly promoted by famed former CIA contractor Edward Snowden in a Twitter post late last year. The idea of zero-knowledge proofs comes from several MIT researchers back in the 1980s.
In simple terms, zero-knowledge proofs means that between two parties of a transaction, each party is able to verify to the other that they have a specific set of information, without revealing what that information is. This is significantly different than other systems of proof where at least one party needs to know all the information. An example of this would be a password stored on a server in plain text.
In this case, if you were logging into the server, you need to have the password and the server needs to check if the password you entered is correct. With zero knowledge proofs, the person logging into the server could essentially demonstrate through mathematical proof that they have the correct password without revealing what that password is. Of course today most websites do not store user passwords in plain text and instead, store what is called a hash. You run your server setup configured for your needs, but it is hosted by the p2p network, and presented as a normal web page.
DDoSing is dealt with because it would be like pushing a bubble around under wall-paper.
Your site is just served from somewhere else, or even multiple somewhere elses.
I haven't had a chance to play with this, but I thought I should bring it to your attention.
Potentially we can end bandwidth, storage, and geographic limitations.
I knew this was technically possible, but now I can stop trying to convince you lot, and just show a working site.
The home page hosts several forums using it, and is itself running on the backbone of p2p.

It's a highly insecure system.
There's a reason why sites aren't hosted in P2P, and that's the extremely high insecurity of whole concept behind it.
To put things in perspective: hosting a site in P2P is actually more insecure than having a regular centralized site open to SQL injection, XSS and all sorts of attack vectors. The only thing P2P is better at is that is impossible to do a DDoS to the service, other than that is a failed concept when it comes to a website.

Phrack! We're back! It was only five years ago that issue 0x45 was
released. It may sound bad, but it is also, indeed, quite bad. Issue 0x45
was released four years after issue 0x44. And we are now five years after
that. Just trying to set the context here. The world is so different and so
many things have happened in these five years that it makes no sense trying
to make any point. Phrack has always been a reflection of the hacking
community, and guess what, the community is moving away from itself. By
this we don't mean that there are no talented hackers, because there most
definitely are (just take a look at our authors). We also don't mean that
there is no exquisite public hacking, because there is (again, our articles
as proof). However, there is a clear move away from the collective hacking
mindset that was most prevalent in the past. The word "scene" brings only
smirks to people's faces. There are many reasons for this, and we are all
to blame [1].
So where is the community right now, and, most importantly, where is it
going?
We are all ego-driven, more so nowadays we would argue, and this has
definitely made collectives much harder to thrive. We expect direct payback
from our hacking, in many forms, including reputation. While it was quite
common to receive anonymous papers, in the past five years we got almost
none. Where is the new Malloc Maleficarum? Quality isn't the question here,
we have high quality hacking, we covered that. The question is about the
community and how it has changed in the last 10-15 years. And about Phrack.
Phrack started as a community zine of exchanging technical information and
hacking techniques in a time that it was hard to find it. It later changed.
It became a symbol of achievement, eliteness, and honor to be published in
Phrack. A slight but significant change happened afterwards. Phrack
gravitated (willingly or not is the subject of another discussion) towards
an academic medium. Academia noticed the high quality of Phrack papers,
started citing them, and basing their offensive and defensive work on them.
Did that alienate the underground that Phrack represented for so many
years? Yes, we think it did. But the underground also changed. Some of it
became involved in malware, spyware, and also the "infosec" industry. And
this mutated the underground. Of course we don't judge. Shouldn't Phrack be
the reflection of the community, whatever the community is? Or should
Phrack be a beacon of the old school underground? Well, it remains to be
seen. Phrack will always be alive as long as the community is alive,
reflecting it. If the hacking community becomes "infosec" in its majority,
then probably so will Phrack. If the heart of the community is CTF, Phrack
will reflect that. If the community focuses on malware, so will Phrack.
Isn't that what Phrack has always done? It always was and always will be
"by the community, for the community". If the community has decided that
Phrack has a five year release cycle, then that's where we are.
Unfortunately, this issue is again an issue of eulogies; we have lost
hackers that have had an enormous impact on our community. Phrack would
like to say goodbye to them. Their loss saddens us deeply, and makes our
community poorer in talent, ethics, and intellect. We also mourn lost
communities. Segfault.net has been our home/hosting in the past and is now
gone.
But we also have some good news! You might have come across Phrack
merchandise [2], well, yes, we have resurrected it! The original 2003 art
work has been found on a backup drive. All profits go to the Electronic
Frontier Foundation. The EFF is a rare example of good and simple advise
for the ordinary citizens. Plus a defender of our rights online and of the
freedom of information. A beacon of light to say the least. The EFF used to
run one of the three FTP servers to download Phrack as well. And let's not
forget that the EFF paid for the attorney of Phrack's co-founder Knight
Lightning in the 1990 court case and supported him all the way. They
defended against the US Secret Service, a ruthless adversary with no
respect for the freedom of information or the hacking scene in general.
With EFF's help the case against Knight Lighting collapsed and the US
Secret Service looked like a pissed on poodle.
