Sometimes being nice is a reward in itself Bradley. Perfect example, the other day I was over the shop helping friends with their farm equipment. They rent an apartment there to an old lady and she came down and ask if I could put a thermostat in her car and I said yeah I'll come get it in a little bit. LOL you ain't going to do shit with that scanner except read some fault codes. Probably the easiest way is to find someone working at a dealership. Write down the VIN and he can use it to program a key fob for ya. Not like the old days when you could jump power to the coil and jump the starter.

You don't even need to be all that smart. I taught myself celestial navigation in the navy because I thought it was interesting, it had nothing to do with my job.
It's best if it is a subject your interested in, pretty sure many early programmers where self taught.

Problem is a lot of folks think you have to go to school to learn anything. People actually ask me who taught me in simple things, all men should be smart enough to repair pretty much anything related to their home. History and art just a click away with the internet, they don't even need to go to the library like I did.
Sure some things you need to go to a school, the average person can't afford equipment some subjects require and for complicated subjects you need an experienced person to help you.
ETA: My wife and daughter both have degrees and I'd say 98% of their learning was reading what their professors told them to read. Hell I even did some of their homework and I'm dumb as dirt.
