2024-10-02 at 8:16 AM UTC in Iran Has Launched Missiles At Israel
Originally posted by Kingoftoes Seems that Israel is going to have a rough time with ICBMs even with the Irone Dome.
Iron Dome can't deal with these, they're too fast and maneuverable - it's meant to be a relatively cheap counter to makeshift missiles and the old rocket artillery Hez has been using.
Typically they'll have planes in the air to intercept but I didn't see any of that; either they moved the bulk of the air force out of the country (I heard a lot were moved to Jordan temporarily) or there wasn't enough time and they were kept in protected positions/destroyed on the ground. There are a lot of rumours about aircraft losses given the primary targets were airbases but no actual confirmation.
In this case they would've had to have relied on naval interception from allies and the more advanced ARROW and DAVID'S SLING complexes but I just looked it up and they only officially have 2x batteries of each which is nowhere near enough to deal with such a massive number of missiles even if they were as accurate as advertised. -

2024-10-02 at 4:03 AM UTC in Iran Has Launched Missiles At Israel
Originally posted by Kingoftoes Middle East tensions are rising.
Iran has launched 100+ missiles at Israeli population centers, including towards Tel Aviv. Seems the Iron Dome wasn't able to do a great job at intercepting them, as a bit of Israeli infrastructure has been razed in Tel Aviv.
They primarily targeted airbases, radar stations, intelligence posts and anything related to planning and orchestrating the attacks that killed Nasrallah, Haniyeh and others, as well as equipment and troop concentrations in the north near the Lebanon border. There were recorded hits on offshore oil platforms and rumours that significant numbers of aircraft were destroyed on the ground but we're unlikely to get a clear picture of how effective the strikes were for a while.
The weapons used this time were all ballistic missiles which only gave israel a 15 minute window between launch and impact, and the activation of missile forces was detected by US surveillance roughly 2 hours before firing. IRON DOME cannot deal with modern ballistic missiles, it would've been up to the much less common and more expensive ARROW and DAVID'S SLING complexes. The combination of their overstated effectiveness and relative rarity contribute to what appears to be (looking at the videos available) a low interception rate.
Judging by the videos these missiles were boosting and maneuvering well into the terminal phase which makes them especially hard to intercept, and several videos seem to show a small number of hypersonics among the missiles.
Originally posted by Kingoftoes Just hearing about this now. News stories are like 20-30 minutes old. Expect Israeli escalation and US aid to increase. Not sure if the US will send "ground troops" but keep in mind that this decision would be extraordinarily unpopular with isolationist sentiments increasing in the US again.
Take my predictions with many grains of salt, and my analysis with a grain of salt. Still pretty early for specific analysis but we can get a general idea of what is happening.
There were already reports of US Military units being prepped for the middle east, this will only accelerate things.

nothing official but primary targets seem to be airbases, energy infrastructure and offshore oil rigs -

western media was reporting Iran preparing ballistic missiles a few hours ago, I didn't believe it because it didn't make sense to fire them now but it looks like I was wrong -

not even relevant. the point is that Russia is forced to fight a near-peer adversary which the US hasn't had to do since WWII (which again, it joined after the war was decided and its homeland was never threatened), and yet 'Russia is weak because it isn't winning fast enough'. -

2024-09-30 at 7:07 PM UTC in 5000 rockets hit Israelisrael has begun 'limited ground operations' in Southern Lebanon.
The Lebanese Military has retreated from all (? unsure) posts and moved north of the Litani; Hezbullah units have reportedly taken up some of their positions.
Hezbullah has begun using "Nour" ballistic missiles against IDF staging areas, but it's unclear if they're seeing success (given the IDF media blackout) and what a "Nour" missile actually is, as they have a habit of renaming Iranian missiles. -

overreliance on force multipliers can win battles, not wars. I don't think anyone was talking about 'dominating', you're just slithering because you didn't really have a point to begin with.
