If you buy paper silver then the silver won't really exist. Those obligations will most likely be honoured, so long as you don't expect real physical silver to be delivered (which you aren't entitled to anyway) but the size of the paper market for all these commodities is several times the size of the real market, so the paper market trends to depress prices artificially.
