I think the initial plan was to rush B and force large-scale surrenders but they underestimated how entrenched the 'true believers' were, ie. the intelligence apparatus and extreme nationalists embedded at every level to prevent exactly that.
they also don't seem to have expected the sheer scale of support given by NATO in terms of equipment, soldiers and intelligence - now that they understand they seem to have switched from mobility warfare to attrition, essentially encouraging the west to disarm itself by flooding the Ukraine with weapons that can't turn the tide of the war.
keep in mind that from the start of the invasion Russia had only sent a fairly small force numbering less than 150k, and the majority of them were technicians and standoff weapons operators with the bulk of the actual fighting being done by LDNR militias and Wagner. they have a standing army of around 1 million (which they're trying to expand to 1.5 at the moment) but they chose to mobilise 300,000 outside of that because they consider themselves to be at war with NATO, with the Ukraine just being a battlefield, and it's important to keep the bulk of their 'serious' forces in reserve.
their goal was never to 'take' Ukrainian territory because Crimea was about the only thing that was valuable to them, but to deny NATO from using it to threaten their mainland. they don't care a lot about holding territory (yet), the goal is to grind down the AFU and their supporters because there will be nobody to stop them doing what they want afterwardsThe following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
