They enjoy Section 230, which provides them immunity from lawsuits when not acting as a publisher (which they are). The deal was they were to be an open public platform, where anyone can post freely.

No, publicly traded doesn't mean public sector. It means their shares are available for purchase (and trade) to the general public. Those shares are privately owned by whoever purchases them.

No it hasn't, and being ubiquitous or even important doesn't mean something should be a public utility, for example you don't have any constitutional right to a car or public transport.

Some areas might provide some form of public transportation as a municipal decision but that would just mean some form of public sector option is provided. Your local Honda dealership could refuse to sell you a car for being too loud and rude if they felt like it for example.

Would you like some form of public sector social media site run by your government, where you need to sign up with your legal identification documents and only illegal content results in punitive action?
