In case mmQ wants to read it, I will put it in spoilers, it's a decent short book even as an adult.

The most fundamental rule of the universe is for entropy to increase and disorder to reign, for all structure to dissolve into heat.

The basic moral motivation of life is to (locally) decrease entropy and increase order.

Thus life is at odds with the basic will of reality and existence itself. The effort is futile, Absurd and contradictory.

To serve the highest meaning, life must be minimized in the universe to the point that it eliminated. We cannot do so for all the universe without risking perpetuating life itself. Thus we must eliminate all life on Earth, as that is the maximal progress we can achieve towards the goal of minimizing life in the universe as quickly as possible.

  9. The cold crystalline beauty of the cosmic machine does not need the flower of life blossoming within, festering with bugs that do nothing but procreate and consume, deconstructing it bit by pristine bit to turn into excrement and plastic bullshit.

I wish to develop a nuclear propulsion rocket that can reach relativistic speeds and send it on a journey of constant acceleration around the solar system, building up kinetic energy till on impact, it could shatter the moon.

why are they worth a solitary thought? if you allow them to consume your time beyond that, they win. we can cut them, we can torture them but in the end they win, because its proof they fucked us up beyond repair.

You know what sounds like someone damaged you for life?

Actively not doing something because you think it will result in some abstract win for the other guy in your head. That sounds like they mentally affected your behaviour so hard that you'll never fuck with them again.

In fact it is exactly the kind of rationalization someone who got beaten and has no chance of vengeance would give.

Instead, just coldly destroy their lives for fun. Can't you just enjoy inflicting suffering?

  20. Originally posted by netstat do you think the dichotomy is between 'free' and paid content? was thinking about the problem of shitty online journalism recently and had the idea that it largely comes down to incentives, where 'free' publications want to churn out clickbait type bullshit that is quick, easy and epistemically irresponsible because this incentivises faster consumption, more clicks and therefore more potential advertising revenue, while people who are willing to pay for a subscription to something like the economist are more likely to want higher quality, more factually accurate investigative journalism and the writers aren't weighed down as much by the need to optimise around the publication's advertising strategy

Maybe indirectly but it comes down to the actual ability of the writers, vs "bloggers".

You know how I navigate free news articles I see on the web? I immediately hunt for and click on the source. It will take me to an outlet or scientific or academic source. If not, I hunt for the sources on that source and then click that. Eventually I enhancement down to a paper or something that I read myself and is usually what I actually need to inform myself. Even if I don't specifically understand all the figures, I can carefully read what the authors are conveying and see what they're actually trying to say better than most of the articles by "bloggers" that got me to it in the first place.

If you regularly read any scientific news or economics news articles on the internet, it will drive you to the brink of insanity how much "rephrase wikipedia basic definition" word count padding bullshit you see.

In fact often you will spot blatant falsehoods that you genuinely already know are wrong and betrays the author's utter lack of specific knowledge on the subject.

There are some shining examples even amongst free publications, such as Quanta Magazine for scientific news.

When I read a publication like The Economist, it is clear that the authors usually at least basically know their shit. I don't see too many stilted takes. They don't just blog summaries of some new papers, they will write a broader survey of rich topics that help you gain some basic understanding and set yourself up to do further research on your own with a solid relative foundation.

If you can get talented writers with actual knowledge of the subjects you're hoping to cover, the business model doesn't really matter.
