  1. Don't you just love applying shear force to divide newtonian bodies?
  2. I read research on the impact of video evidence and it is scary how bad video can be about conveying a narrative.
  3. Beatin' 'n' rapin', that's what's on my mind, beatin' 'n' rapin'
  4. Raping men
  5. Raping women
  6. MmQ = measles mumps Qubella
  7. Most women shouldn't feel safe from violence. At some point men started taking away their recognition of the fact that a lion would eat the shit out of women if a man wasn't there to help.

Originally posted by netstat do you think the dichotomy is between 'free' and paid content? was thinking about the problem of shitty online journalism recently and had the idea that it largely comes down to incentives, where 'free' publications want to churn out clickbait type bullshit that is quick, easy and epistemically irresponsible because this incentivises faster consumption, more clicks and therefore more potential advertising revenue, while people who are willing to pay for a subscription to something like the economist are more likely to want higher quality, more factually accurate investigative journalism and the writers aren't weighed down as much by the need to optimise around the publication's advertising strategy

Maybe indirectly but it comes down to the actual ability of the writers, vs "bloggers".

You know how I navigate free news articles I see on the web? I immediately hunt for and click on the source. It will take me to an outlet or scientific or academic source. If not, I hunt for the sources on that source and then click that. Eventually I enhancement down to a paper or something that I read myself and is usually what I actually need to inform myself. Even if I don't specifically understand all the figures, I can carefully read what the authors are conveying and see what they're actually trying to say better than most of the articles by "bloggers" that got me to it in the first place.

If you regularly read any scientific news or economics news articles on the internet, it will drive you to the brink of insanity how much "rephrase wikipedia basic definition" word count padding bullshit you see.

In fact often you will spot blatant falsehoods that you genuinely already know are wrong and betrays the author's utter lack of specific knowledge on the subject.

There are some shining examples even amongst free publications, such as Quanta Magazine for scientific news.

When I read a publication like The Economist, it is clear that the authors usually at least basically know their shit. I don't see too many stilted takes. They don't just blog summaries of some new papers, they will write a broader survey of rich topics that help you gain some basic understanding and set yourself up to do further research on your own with a solid relative foundation.

If you can get talented writers with actual knowledge of the subjects you're hoping to cover, the business model doesn't really matter.

  16. The only service I provide is marketing. I buy Facebook and Instagram ads to try to get people to pay $45 for a product that at max costs $22, but through me.
  17. I sell Chinese products for a 200% markup to fools over the internet. It feels like a scummy way to earn a living but at least it's easy.

Originally posted by Sudo I've had a subscription to the economist for roughly 7 or 8 years, including while incarcerated I circumvented institution rules to get them in through the library and through the mail. They have gotten worse lately but the old ones are gold for anyone who understands what it means to be a "classic liberal" enthused by neoclassical economics. I'm not sure what you mean by "back in the day" but in 2014 every issue had putin on the cover. 2017-2019 every issue has had trump. There are good articles in them, not all by any means and the features tend to be context specific and slanted (AS WITH ALL PUBLICATIONS) but it's got good info between the bullshit. More in depth, factual and involved with cold, hard numbers than most weekly's that's for sure. Don't really know a thing about newsweek.

Ayyy me too buddy, I also get the Economist. It really is an excellent magazine. It blows my mind how shitty most online publications are.

You know how amazing it is that I can read any of the articles in a magazine in 2021 and not go "well that's obviously bullshit"? I always forget till I click on some bullshit in my Google feed and realize it is garbage.

Newsweek/Businessweek are both good mags too, not quite as good but good.
