   As a kid of five, that's true, I was too slow for them. The chicken would peck hard with its beak, lightning fast strikes to the face and body, and it tries to dig its claws into the arms or legs as soon as you grab it. It already knows what's happening, because it's already seen what happened to its predecessors. The way I would do it is to wait until it was looking the other way, then grab it by the neck and yank it onto the block, then try and get my knee on top of its body and pin it down for the couple of seconds it took to lop its head off with the axe. Several times, I missed on the first couple of strikes, and they got away on me, with half their head hanging off and flopping around, or a big slice down their shoulder pumping blood. Quite gruesome.
