Their claim is that they hacked the pagers of Hezbullah members to overload the battery, causing an explosion.
This is unlikely the actual story; there are several videos of explosions and they appear far too powerful and consistent to be lithium cell explosions (in most cases small cells will ignite rather than explode anyway):
The real story is likely that israel was able to intercept shipments of mobile devices popular with Hezbullah and add an explosive charge inside the housing, which was then activated when a particular message was received by the device. 2024-09-17 at 5:41 PM UTCAnd a battery is the only place in any electronic device I could see you being able to fit any explosive. How good of a bomb could a pager make and still function? If it's a regular beeper with a triple A battery and you did something with that I couldn't see it doing that much damage. But I think high explosives are more powerful than gunpowder.

maybe, you'd need custom firmware to have it trigger an explosive when a specific message is received rather than just whenever it beeps or vibrates, and that is difficult to do without the manufacturer's help. it's like the time all the major hard drive manufacturers colluded with the NSA to embed data collection in the firmware, except this time it killed people.
also there's some disagreement whether the devices that exploded were made by MOTOROLA or APOLLO, a Taiwanese manufacturer.

I'd assume so but I don't know how they run their communications. pagers are one-way only so I'd assume they use them for sending general updates to members, radios get used in the field -

I've seen people say the explosion seems consistent with around 10g of C4 (thought it probably wasn't C4 that was used), you might be able to fit that in dead space, drill out the housing, or replace the standard battery with a smaller one so that it still operates but has more room for special featuresThe following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
