I'll be heading out to the dark site in a couple of weeks with my double best mate for some stargazing and equipment testing.

I'll take some pics of my setup/equipment etc and post them here for you to salivate over.

That's a decent sized amateur scope in any country...looks like what, 16-20" mirror or so...shame about the 1.25" eyepiece though.

I'm not really into Dobs...they are nice to have and I'll probably get a big one at some point (I've had ones in the past and sold them).

Being 6'4" it's a pain in the ass to use them at anything other than the zenith...if you are looking at an object near or close to horizon you are basically laying on the floor to look through the eyepiece.

When I had an 8" dob I used to put it on a table...which caused stability issues but was still better than crawling around on the floor.

ETA: But you can't beat them for best "bang for the buck"

Right now I have the as mentioned Celestron 9.25 evolution which is my main scope, a 6 inch Newtonian reflector on a (vintage) German equatorial mount, A Meade ETX 125, a 6" achromatic reflector (can't use at moment because no mount for it)..that's big scope for a refractor, a Bausch and Lomb series 4000 4" SCT (more of a collection piece than for use), An meade ETX 90 (good for traveling with, sticking in the car etc), a 3" short tube reflector that I bought to use as a guidescope to piggy back on something bigger...and a couple of unmentionable pieces of shit.

    No.

And those websites that claim to name stars for you/after your wife/etc etc are all rip off sites...the only authority that names stars is the International Astronomy Union (the IAU).

If you paid $30 to name a star after your dead dad, you wasted your $30.

  20. So far so good for Friday night. Weather forecast so far is clear/partially cloudy which is ok, It's primary an equipment testing night anyway and showing my apprentice the ropes.

I'll be getting there before dark so will take some pics of the setup.
