There were mostly migrations from central Africa and Southeast Asia (China and India) towards the banks of the Mediterranean and towards Irak, Irán and Eastern Turkey, mountainous regions with numerous rivers that helped settlers develop agriculture ten thousand years before it was developed in Europe. The Persian, Akkadian, Summerian and Assyrian empires developed rapidly there during the last decades before the great flood, which was triggered by climate change after they had deforested several areas of the region to build great cities, thus provoking a large scale thawing of the glacial ice that still covered the entire mountains back then. The cities nearest to the oceans got swallowed up by the sea and the people fled inlands. Many also climbed into their boats with a pair of each of their farm animals, which is where the Noah's ark fable comes from.
The people stay in that desert because of it's spiritual meaning, it is the oldest known settlement of man kind and most of our known story happened there and most likely the place where most people's bloodline began, at least for them. Most of us in the West are totally alien to it and it is only relevant to us because the religion our ancestors were imposed with by Roman conquerors originated there.
