this turned out to be true - he was seriously injured by a missile, currently incapacitated with head wounds, no prognosis if and when he'll recover.
it probably doesn't make much difference on the ground because Zelensky and pals were largely overruling him on strategic matters anyway (he was regularly trying to convince Z to stop throwing men at Bakhmut), but rumour is he was being groomed by the US/NATO to be Z's replacement should Z lose control or start acting against their interests (ie. negotiations without preconditions).
taking the possibility of a popular replacement off the table strengthens Z's bargaining position with the western powers and they're in a pretty desperate position as-is, so it's possible one of his inner circle actually leaked Zaluzhnyi's position in the first place
