Heard a recording / short mention of this guy played on the radio, I'm not seeing what's so bad or controversial. Was he supposed to have a bunch of managers do the exact same thing, but 900 times individually instead of him just doing it once?
A lot of people don't like firing their workers, he got his hands dirty doing the deed and now his managers don't have to feel any guilt about doing his bidding. And his way isn't a long drawn out process where rumors spread and EVERYONE wonders omg are they gonna call me in next? seems quick and humane

I'd assume their divisions weren't closing, and the company wasn't exiting specific markets, and the company didn't suddenly find itself with a shortage of work, so I'd say they were targeted for termination. The fact that he says that the company needs to cut costs and doesn't say "well, we don't have work for you to do anymore" makes me think that. Could even be a rank and yank exercise.
Usually the department heads are told “get me a list of x amount of people by Friday” and they select who they think their loss would be the least disruptive to the business or whose position seems the most redundant. Or they pick who they like the least. That’s at least been my experience.
