How did your parents give you allowance?

I dont know why I was thinking about this but for some reason I started remembering when I was a lad. My dad told my lil bro and I if we did certain things everyday during the summer we would get so much money at the end of the day and I don't even know how much it was. I was 11 and my brother 9. We would clean stuff and help my mom and do dishes and he would give us money.

My brother and I got kinda pissed about are mom yelling at us while we working making it harder to work. So when they would go antique shopping and I was in charge of my brother we would commit psyop's. Like we got my moms fabric scissors and I told my brother to cut the power cord to the tv in the kitchen. He did and It fucking made a slight explosion and I told him to not say anything, even the scissors had a huge burn mark on them and a piece of the metal blown out. We hid the scissors and when my parents came home, and they were asking us why it looked like the chord was cut we just kept lying about how we didnt know.

My parents re-tiled the entire dining / living room front of house, so when they would leave I would put two ice cubes by the baseboards only by one specific spot of where my dad had been bitching about the original tiles "buckling".

So when they'd come home and see a small puddle of water there , he started freaking out. We did that maybe three times then let off.

So then they cut us off of getting an allowance and just made us work. My dad would call up every realestate salesman and ask if they needed there lawn mowed and he'd load up the lawn mower on a trailer and I would cut that vacant house's grass and the real estate agent would give me 30 dollars (which is pretty good for being 12) so I did that for a few years.

Then I got my first job at whataburger at 16, and I started making my own money , but I withdrew a bunch of money and my dad was able to see it so he blocked the account from me being able to take it out. So i moved out and he sold my car i bought and gave me 3k and thats that.. never been back fam lol

(oh yeah sploo and roshambo can't post in this thread cuz we already know they don't do chores and their parents don't trust them with a dollar)

My house was the local drug den, its hard to clean the kitchen when there's hookers smoking crack on the stove and drugs being manufactured in the basement.

My parents felt bad so they would give me $100 for the weekend and I would go stay at a friends house every weekend and we usually saw a movie or ordered pizza.

I woukd come home Sunday night and the house would be completely trashed, all the valuables from my room missing and people passed out all over the place. Usually nobody slept this entire time and they are still in party mode.

Sometimes the party goes through Monday morning and they are still there when I go to school and still there when I come back. Nobody leaves until the drugs run out, and there is a constant flurry of dealers and fiends so the drugs never ran out.

I tried to change the cat litter box once and some tweeked out looking crackhead wouldn't let me in the basement even though it was my house. He just stood in front of the door and said "can't do down there kid"

For a while I would get like $10 a week for helping with chores for a while, then one day they just stopped paying me and kept making me do the chores

I just started getting an allowance at some point, didn't need to do anything for it. It was pretty meager though, a few times my mom tried to talk me into doing dishes or something for it and I was like "nah, that's alright, I'll just get a part time job or not have money instead" so I think it was a valuable lesson in the value of human time. I often think that a cultural lack of a notion of opportunity cost is what keeps economically disadvantaged people that way.

But yeah, chores are kind of retarded. Kids suck at them and the "teach kids work ethic" is slave mentality bullshit. Better off your kid go do drugs in an alley of their own volition than learn how to be a good wage slave by parental demand.

Slave mentality? Lol. I don't think teaching a kid a little responsibility and introducing them to the real world is quite the same thing as enslaving them.

They didn't. I earned all the money I wanted to spend. At a younger age it was by doing chores around the house. In my teenage years, it was by doing yard work/washing cars etc around the neighbourhood. Aside from that, my parents would make me ask them for things rather than money, and shot down any retarded ideas I had.

    Well, this explains a lot...

My dad introduced me to all the good shit. He basically formed the entire foundation of my musical preference. I was probably the only kid on the bus in elementary school that listened to Dio, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, and Kansas.

When we were kids, he would pay my brother and I $50 bucks each to scrap out his houses after he was finished hanging the sheetrock. I'm a year older and we were about 11 and 12 when we started, so that was big money back in 1997. Plus, it was fun. There was always some shit to get into on a job site. Good times.

If we hadn't worked for him in a while, my dad would just give us $20 or so on Friday night and take us somewhere like the mall or to the movies or whatever. Also, good times.

What kind of pussy-twink parent gives an allowance? The fuck? Your parents don't owe it to you to give you money for doing basic shit. How the hell do you instill good work ethic in a child when you PAY them for doing things every human should do, like maintaining the place they live. Either have them do something that's actually useful (not just cleaning or mowing or shoveling) or give them the money as a gift. Otherwise you end up with spoiled brats who say shit like, "But what's the point in doing the dishes if I don't get paid to?"

Bill Krozby, your story makes me ill. I will be suing you for emotional damages.
