Yes PeedyButt I know the logic behind it. I still think its dumb. You shouldn't have to define yourself that way. If you're too stupid to remember that your drug of choice has ruined your life then you deserve to have it ruin you.

Why were you sponsoring someone in AA anyway?

    NA.

He was a young lad of 19 who worked from me at my last job and he needed to go to NA and have a sponsor who was a responsible person so he asked me his boss (I didn't give him any money but that's what they called them)...can't remember why he had to have one, I think he was on probation or something and it was a requirement.

...as if I could do shit if he decided to drink 4 bottles of cough syrup at 3am...I'd likely be like "Motherfucker waking me up at 3am...drink 100 fucking bottles"

the meetings were at a church but not in the church (they had a "house" around back for such crap). First day we got there I wasn't sure if it was the place because like i say it looked like a regular house...there were a couple of scallywags hanging outside so I said

"Is this where the NA meetings are held"?

One of said scallywags walked over to me and started to try and hug me...

I said "not me motherbitch, him" and pointed at the young lout.

Your sponsor is supposed to be someone in the program who also identifies as an addict, not just any person you want, lol.

Also generally someone who has at least 2 or 3 years sober and has “worked” all the steps

I can easily sense that I would enjoy a roight proppa hug with/from you. Good energy. I might even extend it beyond 5 or 10 seconds so we could spin around and walk in a circle like a carousel, bobbing up and down...circular..circular...all good things, harnessing the good energy, releasing the bad.

Dunno, from what I recall he was told to find a responsible person and at the time I was the only responsible person he knew lol...so he asked me. I asked him what was involved and he said "I'm supposed to call you for support if I feel like I'm going to abuse and it would be nice if you come to a couple of the meetings"

He was a good kid and thought I was fucking awesome so naturally when someone pets my ego I "helped a nigger out".

ETA: Maybe he lied to them and said I was a former addict and didn't tell me about that..the fucking little twat...

Nah I get it, I mean at the end of the day it really shouldn't matter who sponsors you as long as, like you said, they're responsible and understand what it actually entails to fill that role. Its just more of a technicality that they say it needs to be someone in the program who has been sober for quite a while and can relate more closely to the actual struggles of the addict/alcoholic they're sponsoring.

Then again I find meetings to be cringe in general and the whole thing just isn't my cup of tea. Like if it works for you, neato mosquito do what you gotta do, but in my experience it's really just a complete replacement addiction and the people it works for end up revolving their lives around meetings and the AA/NA CULTure in general.

It doesn't exactly seem fun for me to focus my life around discussing the thing that I'm trying not to do anymore. I'd rather just move on and put it behind me.

And yes he probably did that lol. I actually did this once in a treatment program I was required to have a sponsor from AA. It was also in fact my boss at the time (who was in fact sober for 20+ years), but he by no means considered himself a sponsor nor had he been to a meeting in 20+ years.

Since this was all court-ordered I actually had to set up a meeting between him and my treatment counselor so she could verify I wasn't bullshitting her. He was cool enough to meet her and basically lie saying that he still went to meetings occasionally.
