They have a second one now?
I believe their first one was a 1980s (or was it 1970s) Soviet Carrier that Ukraine had, rusting away in Crimea. A businessman in Macau bought it in order to allegedly transform it into a Casino. Then it became the pride of peoples liberation navy.
What's their second carrier?

while do I think people overhype china (it sells newspapers/generates clicks), I also don't think they should be taken too lightly. The best way to keep peace is to deter them from doing anything stupid, and the best way for that to happen is continued US naval dominance, and to arm their neighbours to the teeth with anti-ship and anti-air missiles. Make the decision to stay peaceful really easy for them - the more their economy slows, the more it might appeal to their leadership to do something militarily as a distraction.

Id wager carriers just arent much use to china. They do a lot more with cyber warfare, bioweapons and mechanized infantry. Unless they wanted to do bombing runs into the heartland, i cant imagine what use theyd have. Wed just fire a ton of missles at it anyway

US carriers are actually effective platforms for fighter jets, I know the first PRC carrier wasn't.
I am pretty sure the US considers a sinking a carrier equivalent to an attack on the US itself. So it's very much a case of sailing in contested waters and seeing if the Chinese want to start a nuclear war over their territorial claims.

Like I said, modern missile tech has made carriers obsolete. In the case of actual war and not just posturing, it would be far too dangerous for carriers to be deployed anywhere near the theatre because there is no way to protect them from Chinese DDF21Bs or Russian Kinzahls, for example. Further to that I have no doubt any capable adversary would actively hunt them (even outside of active warzones) just for the morale hit.
The only instance they're (militarily) effective is when they're able to attack with impunity against countries that have no effective anti-air or hypersonic/ASBM capabilities, ie. menacing brown people.
