    Ok yeah, compression algorithms are copyrighted. So converting between file types becomes a legal problem and not a programing problem.

    I've been using audaicty since the mid 00s it doesn't have this feature.

    You should try avidemux and use the copy mode so you actually know what I'm talking about

    This, and what kind of editing are you trying to do? What kind of editing you can do to compressed files without re-encoding is really limited and dependent on how it's encoded. Most editing is a function of and to PCM, which you can only get by decoding. E.g. MP3 uses DCT for compression and you're never going to be able to remove a single sample and have a valid MP3 file. You might be able to remove a frame, but there's no reason frame boundaries would align with anything you might want to cut.

    I want to take an audio file, edit it and then put the data into a new container without converting the file like in avidemux.

    what format is the audio file? every major audio app has the option of editing without reencoding.

    i did it with an m4a just now.
