You should try avidemux and use the copy mode so you actually know what I'm talking about -

This, and what kind of editing are you trying to do? What kind of editing you can do to compressed files without re-encoding is really limited and dependent on how it's encoded. Most editing is a function of and to PCM, which you can only get by decoding. E.g. MP3 uses DCT for compression and you're never going to be able to remove a single sample and have a valid MP3 file. You might be able to remove a frame, but there's no reason frame boundaries would align with anything you might want to cut. -

what format is the audio file? every major audio app has the option of editing without reencoding.
i did it with an m4a just now. -
