   Ok yeah, compression algorithms are copyrighted. So converting between file types becomes a legal problem and not a programing problem.

   This, and what kind of editing are you trying to do? What kind of editing you can do to compressed files without re-encoding is really limited and dependent on how it's encoded. Most editing is a function of and to PCM, which you can only get by decoding. E.g. MP3 uses DCT for compression and you're never going to be able to remove a single sample and have a valid MP3 file. You might be able to remove a frame, but there's no reason frame boundaries would align with anything you might want to cut.

   what format is the audio file? every major audio app has the option of editing without reencoding.
