To be truly happy and content just live in the moment and be a real, full person. Take the good with the bad, as much as it hurts because that's what makes life feel worth living. Tell him to face life head on, and not to numb himself to it like some child sucking his thumb. That's what they want him to be, those evil motherfuckers at the top who are running this shit show, because it makes it easier for them to take advantage of him. He doesn't need to live life like that.

the wanting to be numb is a response to the physical and mental pain he feels on a daily basis. Thats not his natural state of being or desire, just a coping mechanism that hes well aware is negative and unhealthy and has been something hes dealt with for over a decade. Drug dependency is definitely an issue which makes things worse. Hes pretty disenchanted and cynical about the world as well but isnt afraid to make his mark on it. Drugs obviously dont help things but I dont think theyre his biggest problem.

I agree it is cowardly to have to be numb to face the world but it becomes a terrible cycle to get out of and with his daily responsibilities it makes it easier to manage. Getting off will be difficult but definitely attainable

There is the arguement that the drugs correct your balance...not numb you. I'm obviously not a doctor but I figure if you have some sort of imbalance and the drugs balance/correct it then that's not being numbed by them..it's being put straight by them. You could look at the untreated imbalance as numbing you to reality just as much.

Well hes prescribed the drugs he takes and doesn't take anymore. Bipolar disprder is prevalent in his family which is the result of an imbalance so its possible he has one. He should definitely get it checked out since hes been pretty up and down his whoke life but has always told himself he isnt bipolar, likely because so many people around him are and hes viewed his own issues as different

Fuck knows, it could very well be an imbalance but it seems onset by trauma and events more than anything as he feels his mental health getting worse over time, even in the face of personal successes. Its tricky to be objective which is why u need someone to help like a trained professional or a website full of degenerates

Even though this is third person speak and I genuinely know who SWIM really is... In the nicest bromo way possible,

It's very easy to discern what bull shitters like Wariat and some other spastic losers on here say they are. In regards to SWIM I genuinely belive most of his "accomplishments" are true, or I would like to per se.

However I am drawn to question as to why one would feel the need to ask other "unvalidated", "unaccomplished", failures questions he already knows the answers to? It sounds more...bravado, boasting????

The several cars gave it away, sorry. Regardless, I'm sure without fabricating details there is some truth to SWIM's dilemma.

I thought it was necessry to mention the conventional masculine accomplishments coupled with the feelings of emptiness. Achieving things people seek to achieve and feeling no better at all, its basically so nobody would say "u need to do something that doesnt apply to you" when Im really a high functioning sad piece of shit

edit also Im very hard on my vehicles I have 3, only 1 of which I like and 1 has been in the garage for a month

Wren here to give your friend amazing advice on dealing with depression because Wren's depression is so bad that he clearly knows how to give good advice on how to break out of it. Hurrrrrr

Option a: be sober, get on prozac, become manic within 2 weeks of taking it and ride that wave for the next year, loving every minute of it, until the inevitable crash that puts you in a deeper depression for the next 5 years while you look back at your manic state always wishing you could get back to that but unable to do it which just adds on to the depression layers and makes life suck as you sit around living in the past

    Option b: sleep 24 hours a day

Option c: do happy drugs 24 hours a day

Option d: turn your oven onto broil and get in there. Get it over with

Option e: get like 10 little kitty cats and just let them love on you all day

    Option f: brain transplant

I dunno it's like someone who is check listing what they already have, then complaining about why they are not content with?

Don't moan about what you have already but what is clearly missing in your life. Your situation may not be improved by additional materialism; but maybe loss of EVERYTHING.

The philosopher Dyogenes came from wealth but lived out most of his life with nothing and was more free than any man. I disagree with his immoral characteristics but the other stuff he practiced, he was right.

I have had really bad problems with depression. I don't really have any really good advice.

Happy pills help, so do stimulants, and so does exercise and a good diet.

Bright indoor lights also really help - switch out dim bulbs for much brighter ones.

But I don't have any cure.

When I exercised and slimed down and was eating small portions of super healthy food I wasn't depressed at all, but I don't exercise or eat especially healthy now and have put on a lot of weight, so that clearly didn't work long term.

Oh that reminds me my mom bought this LED lamp thing for me like a year ago and I was supposed to just sort of sit in front of it for half an hour every day while I fucked around on the computer or whatever. I did it for like 3 days and then I forgot all about it.

I think I have a skepticism that sitting in front of a light will make me happy. But apparently it's a thing. I should probably try it again.

Yeah I think those SAD lights are pretty silly, but I think that having a very bright LED light on a timer in my bedroom come on at 5 or 6am every day really helped, especially in the winter.

And brighter bulbs generally - indoor lighting is amazingly dim in terms of lux or lumens or energy or whatever. There are smartphone apps that can tell you what the light level is.

In the winter on overcast days I find even just looking up at the clouds is good, it gives you a dose of natural light.
