That is extremely rare from what I understand. I've never met a person on the ins or outs that has been charged and made to pay money for their period of incarceration.
The rate to house an inmate is something ridiculous like $40 a day per inmate, and even though exploitation of prison labor it doesn't hold a candle to the amount it takes to actually run and pay for a prison. Plus they still pay workers for their work (although very nominally.) No prison is supporting itself by contributions from inmates' family members. -

It's €73,802 per prisoner per year here. In California it's $95,000 per year, though in the US as a whole it's more like $40,000.

$100 a day is $36,500 per year.
You aren't keeping anyone locked up for $40 a day. -

Lol yeah I just kind of made that number up. I know at least in terms of jail time you are sometimes able to sit your time at that rate in lieu of paying fines. So instead of paying a $560 fine you can just do 2 weeks. -

Same sort of thing here. You're often better off going to jail, as you wouldn't be able to earn so much. And if your sentence is under a few weeks they'll sometimes take you to the jail, check you in, declare themselves full up, and let you go in the same day. -

In the not too distant future, maybe 20 years from now, prisoners will be able to pay their way out. So if you or your family has a hundred thousand dollars just sitting around collecting dust, they can hand it over to the private prisons and the prisoner's sentence would be reduced or eliminated entirely, depending on the sum. True story. -

Yeah that already happens, except the prisoners dont have to see a day in prison. -

2020-03-02 at 10:24 PM UTCI've seen a lot of liveleak. The shit they do to burglars and rapists always seems to show just how much they are hated. It sucks to be a victim of crime.

Like that old LiveLeak video where they chop the kid's hands off at the wrists for stealing apples or something, and he's twisting and squirming around and they're all gathered around and watching approvingly. -
