   My dad back in England needed an operation on a hernia, they told him 18 months wait time...my brother and I paid for him to have it done privately...3 weeks.

    Basically you don't have people dying from lack of medication or going bankrupt because they got a disease.
    
    Also you remove some of the profit incentive, which helps lower costs, especially as what exists in healthcare, even in the US, is very highly regulated, with artificially constrained supply, very far from a free market.
    
    In addition you allow the government to bargain with drug companies to set prices of drugs. It's not ideal, but governments have far more market power to bargain than sick people trying to fill prescriptions do.
