The guy in the convenience store seems to have acted reasonably considering he probably believed the robber could have shot him at any time. Society also hate robbers, and most people are quietly happy to see them being killed.
I simply don't see any real equivalence between the two cases, as they seem to be in such very different circumstances to me.
The correct thing to do when challenged to a fight is to try to back away. If you accept a challenge then legally it can not end well for you, and you have to be aware of that. And just because you are losing does not mean you have an automatic right to glass someone.
Most fights end without any permanent damage being done besides wounded egos, as your fight with Kevin Markey would probably have done. I mean did he have a knife? Was he going for your eyes? Did he try to steal your wallet? It was just a barroom fight, and you handled it badly and you went to jail. Get over it.
Keep in mind that there were two losers in this situation - yourself (and your mom) and your victim, who now has glass in his face. I presume you had no money to pay compensation with.

Once a conflict erupts whether someone brings it to me like Kevin Markley at the bar or I bring it to him by confronting Raphael Luciano the ball is already rolling and it will only be a matter of time before a fight. You cant stop the trainwreck or rolling ball once it starts rolling with people like this who dont admit to any of their own faults or mistakes in situations. You just handle them and get rid of the issue or problem. DO you really think I had any choice when I was hit after I shoved some asshole back who came up to me over some chair for no reason when I was sexually frustrated and in a shitty mood and he should have expected anything else from happening? I am just gonna walk away like a bitch because I see his buddies huddled behind him? Of course anyone would have either stabbed him or shot him or keyed his neck or like me smashed his head rather than face dishonour. Any man will do that rather than walk out being assualted for no reason like a bitch. Same thing with luciano. Once he started yelling and trying to get other people involved and run me out of my area it was only a matter of time and he knew it when Ill catch him alone.

Because in both situations at least for a moment I had my pride. Walking away being treated like a bitch and feeling this way later would have been far worse of a loss than a record.

Like you have a point. If free will isn't real then how can we be held responsible for our actions?
OTOH we also need deterrence, to disincentivise bad behavior. -

Always try and find an alternative way out of the fight, even if that means retreat, but if there's no other alternative, you must battle to the death, using every means possible to defeat the enemy. -

Yeah, well obviously. Like he behaved in a way meant to start a fight, that's pretty straightforward.
