Well technically any parts of our body will shrivel up and fall off if we dont clean and take care of them, so what makes the cord so insiginificant that we can just so easily dismiss it? If a kid shouldn't be circumcised, he/she should also not be umbilicized until he/she can cognitively discern what it means to be so. The cord is half babby's half mommy's so if mom wants her half cut off that's up to her but we should leave the cord on the baby as if it were a body part. -

People actually do that now, it's called a "lotus birth", cord falls off after a few days. -

Once the baby is born, the blood flow to the umbilical chord is cut off; no blood flow and it dies.
From what I’ve seen, as well as with my son, about 3 inches of umbilical remains on the baby, and is clamped off. I had to clean his umbilical chord with alcohol wipes. It shriveled up and died within about 2 weeks IIRC. -
