   I raised those big African snails once.
   
   You can buy the eggs as opposed to the actual snails. Eggs are legal I think, but there may be restrictions on allowing them to hatch. In general tropical animals aren't really a problem so far north, the winter shoahs them.
   
   The biggest problem I had with them is that they were really dirty and smelly - they ate and shit a lot.
