San Francisco’s mayor has joined other members of her family in requesting an early release from prison for an older brother who has served nearly two decades of a 44-year sentence on a manslaughter conviction.

Mayor London Breed sent a letter dated Oct. 23 to outgoing Gov. Jerry Brown in late October asking him to “consider leniency” and commute the sentence of Napoleon Brown, who struggled with drugs from a young age, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday. …

“Too many people, particularly young black men like my brother was when he was convicted, are not given an opportunity to become contributing members of society after they have served time in prison,” she said.

Brown, who is now 46, pushed Lenties White from a getaway car on the Golden Gate Bridge after an armed robbery in June 2000. The 25-year-old woman was struck by an oncoming driver and died.

It's scummy, but hardly the scummiest thing in SF politics, I tell you what.

Breed doesn't have any real power, she got into office but without the appropriate support from special interest groups to do anything significant.

Honestly? I'm kinda down with it. The courts need to have a more reasonable interpretation of events that took place while intoxicated or dealing with drug addiction. Addiction is - more or less - just self-inflicted diminished capacity.

So what's the reasonable interpretation of throwing someone out of a car on a freeway while allegedly intoxicated or dealing with drug addiction? If a drunk person drives and gets into a collision they may have had a diminished capacity to drive and couldn't have avoided it since they were drunk, but they're still responsible for putting themselves in that situation in the first place.

Under the influence of drugs or alcohol should not be a defence unless you can prove that somebody drugged you.

Penis addiction is caused by penises, not people, which is why you can't be held responsible for slurping mine like a cock junkie.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really disagree. I believe that people are responsible for ALL of their actions. There's honestly a pretty specific reason for my position on this which relates to my own experiences in court, but like, suffice it to say: while they might be responsible for making themselves that way, that doesn't mean people who took drugs understood that they'd end up with that frame of mind. Which fundamentally changes the nature of the offence: it's the difference between murder and manslaughter, or criminal negligence. Ya dig? It was negligent of them to take drugs in the first place, sure, but their baseline frame of mind likely differs substantially from the way they'd be thinking on drugs. That's kinda the point of drugs, even?

    I dunno. Ignore me.

Prohibition needs to stand up and take responsibility for creating the desperate situations that junkies find themselves in. Just the fact that it inflates the prices of substances to way beyond anything a normal person could ever afford is nearly always the reason for people turning to crime to enable them to afford it.
