The meaning of life is to give life meaning.

2018-12-14 at 2:55 AM UTCI'm not kidding.
I am actually impatiently awaiting your response right now.
Where does your motivation to do anything come from?
Your brain's reward system is somehow compelling you to do stuff.
Otherwise you'd essentially be catatonic.
So what gets your serotonin and dopamine receptors all aflutter? -

See this, this right here makes sense.
But it does not contradict what I originally said.
The things that one does to distract themselves are what they are declaring to have some sort of meaning.
Ergo, all human beings believe that life has some kind of meaning, whether it be malleable and flexible or rigid and unwavering, or whether it be precisely defined, or just an auto-pilot kind of thing.
OP seems convinced that any and all meaning has no foundation, and is therefore inherently meaningless. -
2018-12-14 at 3 AM UTCNihilism just does not pass the tests of human experience.
Nihilism simply makes no sense. -

I'll be the first to admit that I have trouble finding firm foundation for meaning in life at times.
Hence my thread the other day asking everyone in SG what keeps them off the bus.
But I at least entertain the notion that meaning can be constructed and held on to with conviction, possibly even enough conviction to give it "intrinsic" value.
This so-called vacuous void of meaninglessness is merely one of many possible interpretations of reality.
And quite frankly, I will always be puzzled by anyone who voluntarily chooses that particular interpretation. -
2018-12-14 at 3:11 AM UTCI'll take delusion over truth any day of the week, and I'll bet any living person would too, they just sometimes can't, or for some reason, won't admit to it.
Nihilism + resilience == hypocrisy.
If you continue to live and breathe, you are refuting nihilism. -

Consciousness may truly be vestigial.
Rational thought is really the only tool needed to properly guide behavior.
If genes create advantageous organisms then those organisms reproduce and the gene passes on. So then somewhere within our evolutionary process emotions were deemed essential.
Viruses and diseases serve a purpose in evolutionary terms. Therefore emotions must also.
Or are sociopaths the ultimate evolutionary goal with everyone else being flawed? -

Your faith in human rationality is misplaced, quite frankly.
I like you, so I don't quite want to call you naive, because it seems a bit insensitive.
But come on! Do you really think rational thought, and rational thought alone, is what guides human decisions? Or that humans are even remotely capable of purely rational thought?
Bias influences every single decision every human being on the planet makes.

I think you're guilty of a certain fallacy here, but I can't remember it's exact name...
But basically, sociopaths are technically at an advantage over other humans, just like viruses and diseases that kill us. But I wouldn't put that much stock into evolutionary goals.
Technically speaking, the starfish or some kind of jelly fish are the perfect species, since they haven't evolved in several millenia. They have adapted so perfectly that they literally stopped evolving.
If there is some kind of ultimate evolutionary goal, they have achieved it.
Humans ain't even close. -

I said rational thought was the only necessary tool to properly guide behavior. I didn’t say we were all equipped with it. -
2018-12-14 at 3:27 AM UTCShe did say 'properly guide behavior'
So all the other people who are not acting right, are not using rational thought. -

That's a very Socratic view of rationality, but you'll have a difficult time translating it into the bedroom unless you like little boys in your ass. -

But the only reason we even need to exercise so-called "rational thought", is because of how un-evolved we are.
Are starfish rational?
They literally don't have to exercise a single iota of what we call "thought."
Thus bringing me back to my original point: Emotions and consciousness are disadvantageous evolutionary byproducts.
