I lost some money on it, but it was not worth more than $5 by the time I brought it into the pawn shop. I got $150 for it even though it is not fit for any shooting whatsoever. -

that's just it. they make a profit off people in desperate situations. that makes them nice? no. it makes them a fat profit.
it's like if your paycheck was shorted and you have to wait for your money but your lights are due. or you've been injured and you didn't get to work as many hours as you normally do. and I didn't say there was a trick involved.

You should open a pawn shop where you pay people the exact value of something and make no profit for yourself, because you're a good person and you don't want to take advantage of people in their hard times.

I understand they need to make a profit to stay in business. and I didn't say they should give you the exact value for what you have. but if what you have is worth $500.00 and you are seriously injured and you missed some work $25.00 is not a fair or reasonable price for something worth $500.00.
I also understand it depends on the demand for what you have can make a difference too.
they literally take advantage of people in desperate situations. It's better to come out of the pawnshop with at least enough to make a payment on whatever is due (say your lights) so you either take the money and make a payment on what ever is due or off goes your lights.

Funny enough I do have a cousin who runs a pawn shop in CO but I haven't talked to him in many years, I'm not like, defending pawn shops because of some family ties or whatever.
I don't disagree that in essence, they end up taking advantage of people in desperate spots, very similar to payday loans. It's a double edged sword because the person in desperate need for money is either gonna get a little bit of money for a shitty value, or they don't use the pawn shop and get no money at all.
At the end of the day, people are gonna wind up tight on cash for any number of reasons, and there's always gonna be a need for these types of places to exist. So while we can say they're taking advantage of people, those very people know it.
Is it any different than McDonald's taking advantage of people on a tight budget and offering dollar menu trash as if to suggest they're getting a good deal? A person could buy hamburger and make 5x as many burgers on their own but McDonald's does it for you and takes advantage of your laziness. I understand what you're saying. I only agree in part. I agree with what you're saying about McDonalds. people know what they're getting. but they can go somewhere else.

Like Broker Charlie for example (you can look him up in the Hollywood area around Farifax) he is known for really sketch deals. -
