that's probably the best way to do it, if at all. even moderate withdrawal or rebound can be pretty bad - benzo dependence is virtually the same as alcohol dependence, and if it gets bad enough withdrawals can actually cause grand mal seizures and end up fatal... I used to dissolve xanax bars in spyritus; now I can only have a drink or two before it starts getting unpleasant.
as for opioids, it's not so dangerous, but extremely unpleasant. the worst of it is not being able to sleep, so if you're (/mof) going cold turkey some ambien or similar will really help you out

that's not withdrawal - opioids trigger a histamine (allergic) reaction in some people worse than others; it usually subsides over time.
